This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a forth-year, special education teacher in an inner-city school with a high poverty level. One hundred percent of the children at my school receive free lunch. During my short time as a special education teacher, I have witnessed countless students overcome a number of adversities with learning. They have shown me what a young student can do and still succeed in their education.
I truly have a passion for teaching and I feel so humbled to spend each day alongside these resilient children.
One of the best parts about being a teacher is getting to know each one of my students. Even with all their struggles, they make me laugh everyday! It is apparent these children are so excited about learning and I feel blessed to be the one who has the opportunity to shape their lives.
My Project
Paper may seem like a basic supply, but it's actually in high demand in schools!
Research shows that students respond to brightly colored work and the contrast can actually help students with disabilities read text!
I am asking for reams of brightly colored paper to make task cards, projects, and print reading assignments on. My goal is to print the majority of assignments on colored paper, as opposed to white. I'm hoping this change of color will help my students with disabilities read their assignments independently. Research shows that the contrast of the black words on colors can help with reading, so I'm hoping that providing them a variety of colors, we can find one that works!
