This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a very hands-on bunch. They do their best work when they are able to manipulate materials and have their work in their hands.
I work in a Title I, Baltimore City School.
The children often come to school lacking basic school supplies but are eager to learn. The teachers here are amazing and go above and beyond for their students, often pulling money from their own pockets to help out our students.
My Project
Everyone knows that teachers use a lot of paper! In my classroom, we differentiate the homework based off of their abilities. This uses A LOT of paper. This is only my second year teaching. I have invested a lot of time and money collecting books on various levels. My school also has provided me with an account to print off hundreds of leveled books for my students, but then do not have the funds to supply me with the sufficient amount of copy paper to create all of these wonderful texts. My students also are forced to work in groups very often, so that I do not need to make a copy for all 30 of my children. With copy paper my students would still be able to work in groups, but they would all have their own reading to read off of and follow along.
As much as I would love to go completely green, that is not possible at the moment in my school!
If I was given more paper, my students would have more opportunities to work with materials directly on their level. My students will also have more opportunities to play engaging math games! I would not have to go out and spend so much of my personal money on paper, I could put this money into other engaging projects for my children.
