Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are inquisitive, dedicated, and diverse. They work hard and use problem-solving strategies to find solutions to challenging math problems. They push themselves and strive to learn new things each day. Their effort makes me feel dedicated to helping each and every one of them find success.

Many students in my classroom do not have the means for essential classroom supplies.

Our school is located in an urban setting and our population is ethnically and economically diverse.

Our district implements a variety of learning strategies and techniques, including student-centered learning. Group collaboration and differentiation ensure that all of my students' needs are met. I am fortunate to work with a group of students who are passionate and keep a positive attitude at all times.

My Project

My students love to use art supplies to express their creativity in the classroom. Giving students a creative outlet to demonstrate their knowledge helps to engage students that otherwise have difficulty getting motivated. They need paper, scissors, glue, colored pencils, crayons, markers, and tape to create posters so they can demonstrate their understanding of key Algebra 2 concepts throughout the year. These posters will be used to decorate our classroom and to teach students in younger grades something new!

The colored pencils, crayons, and markers will also come in handy to help students organize their work.

We analyze and compare graphs of multiple functions. Having materials that would allow students to color-code their graphs will help them see transformations from parent functions and the relationship between functions and their inverses. The materials will be kept in the Bella Plastic Storage Cart so that all students have access to any materials they need to succeed.

The disengaged students in my classes have a strong interest in art. They often like to doodle on the side of their papers. Incorporating art into Algebra 2 on a regular basis will draw these students back in and allow them to re-engage with the curriculum. Having a classroom set of art supplies will interest disengaged students. I believe making art connections in math class will allow me to address the issue of disengaged students through personalization and student choice.
