Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in an Environmental Science elective class and one of the projects we would like to do is paper making. We have a million great ideas, but not enough materials to make them all come true.
My students are a diverse bunch of enthusiastic planet savers.
They are wonderful at brainstorming ideas, but they get frustrated when told that we do not have the materials to do certain projects. They are great kids from an urban environment and are low income. Some of them travel a great distance across the city on a bus just to join an environmental magnet. These kids really care. They are the future, let's keep them inspired!
My Project
The paper making kits will ensure that my students get a chance to enjoy making recycled paper. To do this without a screen or paper making kit is very hard. This would make it easier for all kids to enjoy this activity. We have a number of project ideas, such as writing Thank You notes on recycled paper, giving Valentine's Day cards on recycled paper, etc. These materials would give us a chance to do this.
Getting a chance to use paper twice or three times will eliminate the amount of trash my students use.
They are the school's recyclers and this would inspire them to collect even more used paper and keep it from the landfills. Being able to do something fun and creative with trash is a great motivator in recycling it. Especially if you're 12.
