My students are in a moderate/severe autism spectrum classroom and we want to work on expanding our reading program within the classroom. We spend a lot of time working on life skills, money, community based instruction, and accessing the community for jobs and social interactions. My students enjoy sensory stimulation in the form of swings, fidgets, music, art, and visuals. My goal for each student is to leave high school with the ability to access the community safely and work where they find purpose. My students range from 9th-12th grade and have many talents and gifts.
We are a Title I school with students who are wonderful and really try their best.
I have a lot of support from my general education co-educators and we integrate our students together. My students require sensory input throughout the day and they all enjoy arts and working outside. My students ride the bus for at least 40 minutes to come to school without complaint. They enjoy going out into the community and working at jobs like Round Table and CVS.
My Project
My students have been making cards all year for many different things. We make cards for our CBI job site at the retirement home, we make cards for teacher/staff on campus who are facing hardships or having celebrations in their life, and we make cards for our family. We have also started a new unit in Language arts were we are using pictures to create scrapbook pages and tell the story of our life.
We now want to make our own paper using the paper making kit and become more self sufficient.
My students have asked how does someone make paper, where does it come from, and can we make paper? So I have decided to show them so that we can make our own paper and use it to make cards. I'm also hoping that we can turn this into a micro business on campus and sell cards to staff members and become a club. We also have placed an order for cardstock because we are running low and we want to make sure our amazing residents at the retirement home continue to get cards and that we are prepared to have enough supplies for the first two months of the next school year.
