This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a elementary school on the South Side of Chicago. My students are resilient, strong, beautiful children. The majority of my students face financial hardships and do not always have the supplies they need. As a teacher, it is hard to personally supply all my students with the materials they need.
Despite their hardships, my students come to school ready and eager to learn.
I want my classroom to be a safe space where students can escape the outside world. Some of my students are struggling readers, but all of my students love to read, write, and learn! I want to provide my students with flexible seating and paper so that I can print of their work.
My Project
I work with students on the South-East Side of Chicago. In my classroom, I do not have a curriculum or textbooks for students to follow. I print and plan all the work my students do, without the help of a guide or resources.
Teachers and parents must buy paper for the work we print out for our students.
Because we do not have textbooks, we print out a lot of paper! There have been times were I could not complete an activity because I did not have enough paper.
In my project, I would also like to provide my students flexible seating options for an active learning environment. Flexible seating is important because it elevates student engagement and collaboration.
