My Project

One thing I notice and love about my students is their giving spirit! My group of Spotlight students are always working on projects, and always want to make something for someone else.

This community based project that they are participating in this school term is The Pantry Bank to help fight hunger!

We have a large school and even though most students receive free or reduced price lunch, some don’t have enough food for lunch. Often times they are left sitting in the cafeteria with little to nothing to eat. This is where The Pantry Bank will take action. This program will be implemented by having my students recognized as pantry bankers by me. Each week, new bankers will be assigned. If there is a need during lunch to provide for another student they will have a few items available in a drawstring bag that will be returned to my room for restocking after lunch.

As a group we will discuss what the need looks like, how to assess the situation, and how to approach another student. I want the students that will be receiving the snack to feel supported and not embarrassed. I want the student fulfilling the need to feel effective. The Pantry Bank will have items that can be filling and easily handed out. The student bankers will be instructed on the purpose and goal of the pantry. I want to enhance my students’ generous spirit by assigning them a project in which they can learn self control, true generosity, and community service.
