Help me give my students nutritious snacks like oatmeal, sunchips, cereal, nuts, and a few fun energy snacks mini-candy bars, pretzels and peanut butter to name a few.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Most of my students are from low-income homes.
This reason alone places them at risk for many failures and pitfalls in life unless they have the needed support to move beyond their current situation.
My position , as the school coordinator, provides this needed support. With fluctuating incomes in our community, my students are hungry when they come to school, during school and afterschool. In order for them to be able to focus and concentrate on their assignments, the body needs nourishment.
My Project
Research has shown and personal evidence has demonstrated that student learning is hindered by hunger and thirst. My students are unique in age and circumstance. The ages of my students range from 15 to 21. Their circumstances are poverty, single-parent home, lack of food and clothing and in many instances lack of proper housing. Most of these I am unprepared to handle, but I do believe I can help with the food in class and on weekends. I complete home visits to my virtual students and they receive a weekend package, too.
The students can prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner in my classroom with the items that I have requested and I prepare a weekend "goody" bag for them each week.
The students seem to be very appreciative of these snacks and treats.
