Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a diverse campus that serves approximately 635 students, grades 7th through 8th, and between the ages of 12 to 14. Ethnically our students are approximately 87% minorities with 45% being Latin American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander. Twenty-five percent of our students are currently English Language Learners.
At our school, we have 10% of our population receiving services from our special education department.
We have students who come from all over the district including many who are also English language learners. Our students come from a variety of cultures and socioeconomic levels, which means that most students have limited access to technology at home. Students receiving special education services are some of the students with the greatest needs for finding new ways to access the world.
My Project
We are working tremendously to support our students in special education during this pandemic. Having an iPad is a great way to keep communication with my students both on Zoom and FaceTime. In addition, conducting small groups with my students in special education is essential. The iPads will help my teacher's assistant and I teach our students live, providing live time examples of any area of need such as word problem solving and obtaining the main idea of a text.
As a special education teacher, obtaining data is essential.
Strong data taking skills, quantitative, observational and qualitative, is needed to create effective IEP goals. It is difficult to take data on the go. An iPad would assist in taking data when conducting observations in my students' general education zoom sessions. There are apps that will help keep student data private.
With an iPad, we will also be able to provide our students with visual aids to help them better understand what they are learning. In addition to showing videos and audio recordings to fully understand the lesson.
