Our students are curious future scientists, engineers, doctors, teachers, and so many more professions that do not even exist yet! My students love sensory items. In class we are learning to code, read, write, color, count, and our group is working together to meet individual student learning needs and goals as a class.
Ninety-four percent of the students at our school receive free and reduced lunch and live in high poverty conditions.
Additionally, 14 percent of our students are considered homeless. As a result, we create a school culture that welcomes students and families to participate in a variety of activities to help build community and provide families with needed resources.
This sense of community makes students excited to come to school every day! We even have our classes divided into neighborhoods. My students and I are located in the Pond neighborhood. Our dedication to creating a schoolwide community is helping us to teach our students how to work together, be kind and considerate, follow directions, develop relationships, self-regulate, and be engaged learners. Covid 19 has affected the social skills of many students due to lack of social interaction opportunities.
My Project
My students are so excited to be in the classroom in person. The materials on my list are items they may not have access to at home. This will help my students be engaged and transition from all the time they have remained at home during the pandemic. The exercise items like the stationary bike and rower are so fun for an indoor recess. We have done enough sitting around we want to get up move around and learn together through play and interaction. The skills my Pre-K students need are purposeful play and appropriate social interactions. We study many themes throughout the year. The remaining items will be used to contribute the existing items in my classroom to improve and provide more activities for each theme. The dancing cactus will be used as a class mascot. Let's face it we all like a fun mascot!
