My students are in a new public charter school in an economically depressed part of our state. Many of our kids come here because they want to try something different and hands-on. With this current pandemic many of my students are at home with little to no internet connectivity. We have taken as much of our educational lessons and made them into packets and or created thumb drive lessons for each kid that needs it. Many of our kids are needing lessons and readings that connect to the world that they are living through and making personnel connections to their learning.
We focus on the economic impact of our decision making and learn about how small changes can have a drastic impact on their lives and on the world overall.
My students are being taught economic entrepreneurship and how they can start with something small and watch it grow large scale with the right motivation, support, and economic understanding. This pandemic has made the real world application very personable. It has also made getting the children engaged even harder then normal. Having something that is touchable and can be reviewed in person is the most important thing right now.
My Project
I believe reading this book will provide students with culturally relevant reading material that is reflective of the experience of the students we serve. It will definitely increase student engagement, provide opportunities to have rich discussions about resistance, economic changes and how they change the world, as well as how peoples perspectives can change.
In our communities, students are affected by the injustices that occur.
Families have broken apart, resources are scarce, and opportunities are limited. This is a necessary conversation to have with students because this is their reality and the reality we live in. This book provides an excellent opportunity for students to self reflect and to spark their interest in changing the communities and policies that exist to better serve all people. This discussion we will have by reading this novel allows the students to see the future economic possibilities that they have and what issues or problems they may have to overcome to become success stories.
