The majority of our students have had little or no exposure to letters or sounds prior to prekindergarten. Thus, early intervention is essential for our identified high risk early learners that lack literacy based materials and parental involvement within the home.
The students arrive cheerfully to school each day, are eager to learn and do their best.
Despite facing so many difficulties each day, they want to be in school because they enjoy learning and developing early literacy and social skills. These children grow up in home environments that may somewhat limit their abilities to view their place in the world. Our pre-k program believes and supports that the students are our future.
Our students attend a Title 1 urban public elementary school. ELL students are integrated into each of our classrooms and receive ELL services weekly. An estimated 68% of the students participate in the free and reduced breakfast and lunch program. Our school is situated near the world’s largest Navy base and because of this we have a consistent influx of new students with varying ability levels. Additionally, due to parents on military deployments, many of our students often struggle emotionally & academically.
My Project
The Square Panda learning system will be utilized within center activities as well as one on one with the teachers. Students will be able to explore letters and sounds at their own pace within the varied capabilities of the learning system.
Students of varying abilities will be able to work at their own pace within a fun and engaging learning environment to ensure that they are confident in their early literacy skills.
Students today love to use technology while they learn so the Squrae Panda will assist them in building technology skills as well. This tool will enable students to build their skills while using the Ipad.
