My students need a Raspberry Pi kit, a baby monitor, a pan/tilt kit and other parts to build a pan/tilt device to model robotic arm motions that are programmable.
Intro to Computer Science is a project-oriented class that introduces all aspects of Computer Science. The focus is on what can be computed through algorithms, coding, and a wide and wild variety of software. This class also allows students to explore different career fields.
Technology is used to build students' decision-making and problem-solving skills.
Students do many hands-on practical activities ranging from replacing Chromebook screens to soldering to replacing computer components. The intent is to connect apps and programming in Python to actual physical applications from something as small as a security cam to an industrial robot.
My Project
Using simulation software is useful and functional, but, practically speaking, what high school classroom has the space and budget for an actual industrial sized robotic arm?
A pan and tilt device controlled by programming in Python will bridge the gap.
We need a Raspberry Pi kit, a baby monitor, a pan/tilt kit and other parts to build a pan/tilt device. The pan and tilt actions of a security camera mimic the motion and programming needed for their full-sized cousins. Class projects already include writing phone apps. Students will compare/contrast a commercial security camera system control app to ones that they have actually coded for themselves. This also links to to the problem-solving part of the class in designing movement patterns for the security camera, laying a groundwork for the repetitive motion patterns of an industrial robot.
Students will be much more engaged in assembling their own pan/tilt device and coding the program to control the device as opposed to just using a simulation program on the screen. Making the direct connection in coding the actions of the servos will reinforce the concepts of decision structures and looping. Assembling the components will provide a great opportunity as a gateway to computer engineering. Combining the virtual and the actual will most certainly prove to be a winning combination!
