My Students

My students are hard workers. They love to read and enjoy doing projects that go along with their classroom learning. I work hard looking for ways to help their reading with tying in outside classroom experiences. They love to share their life experiences with the reading we do.

There are many examples I have about tying real life to story life.

One example we spent almost two hours discussing an event in a story to our own life experiences. Another example, a student unexpectedly lost his father and we had just finished reading about butterflies and we were making butterflies when another student suggested we make butterflies and put them in sympathy cards for the student.

Every time my students connect their lives with stories they learn so much more.

My Project

Any way a student can relate to their reading creates a better understanding of the reading process. Using a novel in a book study allows for discussion and understanding of what they are reading. When students talk and express their thoughts they take ownership of their learning. More ownership, more learning.

I read the novel to my students last year and we had major discussions of the characters and events tying them to their own experiences.

I realized the students had made an investment in their understanding of reading. Because it was such an experience for them, I wanted to incorporate this novel as a book study this year. Wonder is such a story that all children can relate to.
