I teach in a small, rural community. Many are reluctant readers, but I think that is because they have not had the opportunity to explore literature that is interesting to them. They love reading "The Crucible" because of all the drama, and I want them to have an opportunity to grow and nurture that love of reading!
Over 62% of the students in my district qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
Some of my students are college-bound, but some are looking to enter the work force right out of high school, or wish to attend a trade school.
My Project
I am fascinated with the idea of facilitating book clubs for my American Literature class, where we spend the majority of our year reading American classics. I want to give my students the opportunity to choose what they read and practice the strategies they will learn while reading "The Crucible" as a class.
Book clubs allow students to CHOOSE what they read from a selection of contemporary books that somehow relate to the classic book being studied.
Our unit will focus on theme, and I have chosen books that deal with similar themes from the play.
