Mr. Blackburn from Baltimore MD is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need to be able to pair the higher level texts with lower level readers that bring the geography of Ancient Greece and the horrors of the Holocaust into their lives.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are the middle school population (grades 6th, 7th, and 8th) at a K-8 school in Baltimore. Although very curious and eager to learn, my classroom lacks the materials necessary (textbooks, printer paper, etc) to allow for core knowledge of social studies to be a reality.
In addition, many of my students are below grade level in informational text reading, which is an essential skill for not only success in social studies, but also in being college and career ready.
One of my main tasks is to elevate student reading levels in informational text. History and geography are so driven by text that having a library in my classroom is essential. With that being said, my second project submission is for books so that I can continue to provide quality literacy instruction in my class.
Most of my students have a hard time reading grade level content. With the texts selected here, my 7th grade students will have an easier time understanding the affect that geography had on Ancient Greece, as well as having a way to relate to the horrors of the Holocaust.
Ancient Greece's development was heavily dependent on the geography of the land.
Most students miss this aspect of why the people of Ancient Greece had to lay their city-states out the way that they did. In addition, most students do not relate to the horrors of the Holocaust. It seems to them that it is just another event that they were not alive for. With the title that I selected, students will have a way of relating the technical aspects of the Holocaust to the human toll.
