This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a magnet school, so students come from all over the city of Charlotte. This means they're coming from different neighborhoods, socioeconomic backgrounds, and even from different elementary school experiences. This project is focused on 8th grade art students who are in their last year before moving onto high school. Being an IB school, students are encouraged to gain local and worldviews of their own and other cultures. These students are creative thinkers, collaborators, and are inquisitive of the world who are always looking for new ways to express themselves.
My Project
These supplies are going to be designated for 8th grade students who are in their last year at our school before moving on to high school. I am planning on bringing in a local artist that focuses on storytelling, identity, and cultural expression through their artwork. 8th grade students will get the chance to paint on canvases- most having experiences only painting on paper or other similar materials- using acrylic paints versus watercolors or tempera- with end products that are ready to be hung up for display.
Students will learn ways to tell their own story through their artwork; something we've done in previous years of art, but now using higher quality materials.
They will learn painting techniques but also more about the design process of creating an interesting composition within their artwork.
They all have their own story and identity, coming from a variety of cultural backgrounds. They will learn more advanced drawing and painting techniques as well.
