Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my kindergarten classroom, in the far south-east side of Chicago, are amazing. Listening to their conversations while they are participating in an exploration lesson proves to me, time and time again, that active learning is taking place. My students love to learn using hands-on activities, real-world experiences, and through technology. Young children are constantly learning! Kindergarten is very much a transition age in which children are learning to be independent. They are ready to explore their environment and are buzzing with ideas on how the world works. Providing them with resources to explore and experience the world is fundamental to their future.
My Project
We know that people have different ways of learning; some people learn best visually. Others may learn best when they are using their auditory mode. This is also true for young children. . That means that they also need different ways of expressing what they are learning or thinking. This is especially true of the student who is non-verbal or reluctant to speak.
When a young child paints ( we are requesting paint supplies), you can see how each stroke is carefully thought out.
Taking advantage of this natural expression to understand what a child who is non-verbal or a reluctant speaker has learned is a huge help in the classroom. As a teacher, I can create lessons that are more accurate if I know what a child understands or knows already.
