Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This 4th grade class is full of incredible students from around the world. They bring rich experiences to our classroom from their countries of birth such as Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala, Iraq, India, and Yemen. These students are members of a Title I urban school in Richmond, CA, a school where all students qualify for the free breakfast and free lunch program.
They are eager and happy to learn, despite exhausting social, emotional, and environmental challenges.
Their courage, strength, and excitement for learning power them through each day. Although many of my students arrive to school hungry and tired, they still jump out of their seats and race to our growing classroom library to be the first to choose a book to explore. My students are sweet, inquisitive, caring, curious, empathetic, problem solvers. These children are truly remarkable young people. They deserve the best and more.
My Project
These Richmond fourth graders come to school each day ambitious to learn and explore the world. Because most of my students are learning English as a second or third language, writing and speaking can be very difficult. So, drawing has been a major communicative tool in our classroom. My students LOVE to draw. In fact, creating comic books is a popular activity during our free choice time. As the children's academic skills increase, so does their need for creative expression.
By donating to this project, you will help inspire joy and creativity in the precious lives of these children in need.
Our Title 1 school has limited funds, so the children are restrained to the use pencils and crayons. These kids deserve the opportunity to express their creative ideas with paint, brushes, special art paper, and markers. They love to draw and I know they will be thrilled to learn how to paint.
