My students need artist quality watercolor travel sets so they can paint indoors and out, water brushes, watercolor paper, and watercolor tubes to refill used kits.
Lunch groups and recess time provides a great opportunity for students to explore activities at our school. We have reading groups, kindness club, and electronics in hands too. What we don't have is a painting club.
We are a small school with one class of each grade in the hills of West Virginia.
I mostly work with third through fifth grades. As a special education teacher, I get to work with everyone in all three classes.
Our students are a great bunch of creative kids who love to take advantage of fun opportunities. Sometimes though, they need a chance to do something different, especially on days when weather keeps them indoors.
My Project
My students need artist quality watercolor travel sets so they can paint indoors and out, water brushes, watercolor paper, and watercolor tubes to refill used kits. The students in grades 3-5 will have the opportunity to sign up to participate in real watercolor painting during their recess. A mini class will be held to teach some basic steps on how to handle and care for the materials properly, as well as technique and color mixing.
Following this, the kits and paper will be signed out during recess for use. Indoors, the group can meet with a teacher in a classroom. Outdoors, the group can utilize the pavilion or lawn and work in a supportive group with a teacher.
Students will get to share their work with the school, as well as take it home to their families.
Lessons will include still life and scenery/nature. Student will get to experience a true artist experience that goes beyond regular childhood watercolors. The watercolor kits and papers are artist quality materials.
When we can be outside, our hills and bucolic setting will allow for many natural subjects to paint.
This project will provide a large population of students an opportunity to experience a different art form, and provide a break from the normal routine of their day, while at the same time allowing them to be creative.
I am also trying to establish an after school program that teaches the process in more depth with guided projects each week. This recess opportunity will connect well with the after school program and encourage students to participate.
This project can easily be sustained.
