Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever left a wet paintbrush upside down in a cup? Tried to paint anything with those plastic/nylon brushes that come with art kits. I recently moved to a new district and found that this is exactly what these kids are working with. We need good quality brushes for their painting perfection.
Our school has a diverse population of cultures.
We are a Title 1 school with most of our students free or reduced price lunch eligible. They are great kids who try hard and really want to do their best. They deserve the opportunity to use quality supplies while they are learning. You would be amazed by how different a painting is depending on the brush used. What's better is that when they use quality brushes, They are amazed at how good their art looks.
My Project
Have you ever tried to paint a straight line with a permanently bent brush? Or one that is so floppy you can't control where the paint is going. I try and teach my students that they need to choose the right brush for the right job. Sometimes they may need 3 or 4 brushes of differing sizes or shapes, just for one picture. The picture posted was done by a 3rd grader, using the brushes that I want to purchase. Each set has 12 each, of 6 styles/sizes of brushes. This set has already proved to me that the kids artwork improves with the quality of the brushes. When their artwork improves, their self-esteem and pride in their work improves. Then, they are willing to try even harder. It builds on itself and it all starts with quality equipment and the proper instruction.
Students can be proud of their art work knowing that it is truly a reflection of them, not a reflection of a floppy, half-haired brush or a stiff plastic brush that leaves streaks every time you paint.
