I teach art at an elementary school in Brooklyn. This year I began an art club. This group consisted of twelve fifth-grade students from five different classes. We met for two hours every Thursday afternoon, and the students were responsible to make up any missed work. Our focus was African-American painting. We had a visit from an educator at the Metropolitan Museum who gave us a slide lecture on the holdings of African-American paintings at the Metropolitan Museum. The students selected an artist and proceeded to create an acrylic painting on paper. They came out wonderful. Then, as a culminating group project, each student did a five-by-seven-inch detail of their painting. We plan to arrange these into a mini mural and hang it permanently in the school. As planned, the art club will change members as of March to be fair to other students who did not get to participate. Many of the art club members are distressed that they won't be able to continue with their painting. This breaks my heart! I am asking a donor to contribute enough money to buy my terrific art club paint sets so that they can continue their studies and be the next "Van Goghs" of the world!
