This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My first-grade students in the heart of urban Omaha, Nebraska are amazing! They are curious, insightful, and love to learn. The smiles on their faces each morning melt my heart. For many of them, school is the only time and place that calm and structure exist. I hold high expectations for them as learners and would like to give them materials and experiences that will continue to foster that love for learning.
I am blessed to call these 25 first graders "my kids." Our school is an engaging place of learning with dedicated professionals at every turn.
We are located in a high-poverty and high-mobility part of the city. Most of my students come from disadvantaged homes with minimal resources. We have many students with diverse language and cultural backgrounds. We are ready to be authors, illustrators, readers, scientists, and mathematicians. Thank you for sharing your gifts with my classroom!
My Project
My first graders love to paint and having individual sets of watercolors, brushes, and paper would give them the opportunity to create beautiful pictures and explore right brain thinking when we are unable to go outside for recess due to weather. We have had many cancellations of our art class this year and I would love to give them another avenue for exploring their creativity. By listening to classical music and painting, my students can achieve a state of mindfulness that gets them ready to continue our learning in reading, writing, and mathematical thinking. I firmly believe in the arts and this is one small way I can encourage my students’ creativity.
