This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Each day I have the great privilege of teaching eleven three- and four-year-old students. Through play, we learn math and literacy content, but also important language and life skills. We learn to communicate our needs, build enduring friendships and be proud of who we are and who we are becoming.
We are a tight-knit HeadStart classroom located in a public school in the southeast quadrant of Washington, DC.
The community surrounding our school has many needs. Yet in spite of their challenges, my students arrive each day eager to learn, create and prepare for the wider world.
My Project
When you reflect back on your preschool experience, do you remember painting at an easel? For young kids, painting is an exciting learning experience. Through exploration, students learn to mix new colors, create symbolic representations and more. We are requesting a variety of paint materials for our classroom. We have paintbrushes and a few colors of paint, but we are missing some essential colors and materials.
With these materials, my students will have fun painting, while learning to experiment.
Specifically, we are requesting black, white, blue and yellow paint, as well as dot painters and rollers. We are looking for these colors in particular because they will allow us to mix up a variety of new colors. And the dot painters and rollers will allow us the opportunity to paint in new and different ways!
As we paint we will learn color names and how to create new colors. We will also practice our writing skills, such as how to grasp a writing utensil and move it with control. Through painting my students will learn to make basic shapes that eventually will be used to make letters. These materials will allow us the opportunity to be creative and learn foundational academic skills at the same time.
