I have the pleasure of spending my days with a group of incredibly diverse, energetic, and talented fifth graders. My students are classified as Gifted and Talented which provides for a fantastic spectrum of interests, talents, and experiences for our classroom.
Our reading class discussions thrive on the richness my kids bring with their tremendous personalities and varied experiences.
My students come from all over Houston to attend our school on a magnet transfer. Though they all carry the pressure of a G/T label, they are truly just kids learning and developing in this great big world.
My challenge is to provide my students with opportunities for creative, intellectual, and developmental growth.
My Project
With this request, I am hoping to add many exciting titles to our beloved classroom library. I have carefully selected novels with each of my students in mind so they can continue turning the pages with all the eagerness and suspense a good book should incite. My kids eat books, they devour them! They become lost in them, and they beg to keep reading. Because they love to read so very much they are eating/reading right through our existing classroom library.
I wish to keep putting quality literature in front of my students and giving them the time and space to read and share how much they love their book with others.
The students in my reading classroom enjoy independent reading time every day. This gives them the opportunity to read a book of their choice while challenging themselves as readers. Students journal about their reading using a variety of methods such as quadrants of thought or TBH (text, brain, heart). Students will begin reading conferencing with me this semester to discuss their reading goals, challenges, and successes. I hope these books, including Wishtree, The War I Finally Won, and The Warriors, will give us much to discuss when we come together and will help keep our culture of reading strong.
