Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 30 third graders are curious, eager learners! More than half of them are English Language Learners, and the majority of them come from households with low socioeconomic status. We have eight different home languages besides English represented in just our classroom! My school is a Title I public K-8 school that consists of 47 different home languages and a free and reduced lunch count of almost 90%. I have the privilege of working with students with a wide variety of backgrounds.
My diverse group of students looks forward to coming to school and learning from each other!
The experiences, languages, and cultures my students share adds a whole extra layer of learning to our class. They put forth loads of effort in order to communicate with each other, no matter how big language barriers are.
My Project
Our classroom is ready for an iPad with an Apple Pencil, as we are set up with an Apple TV that needs more to go with it! The iPad will be used as an important communication tool in our classroom.
Students will be able to show their thinking regularly and easily, especially when they are using the Apple Pencil to record different strategies they use to solve math problems or ideas they have for writing.
They will be able to write with ease, using the Apple Pencil, and explain their thinking, as the iPad gets projected onto our whiteboard. I will be able to take pictures of student work and display them instantly in order to deepen our class discussions. Therefore, students will be able to share no matter where they're at in the room and grab everyone's attention with this technology in use!
My English Language Learners will definitely benefit from this technology. My students and I will use the iPad as a translator to assist in communicating with students with very limited English. We will also use it to quickly look up and share pictures to aid learning, especially when new vocabulary arises. The Apple Pencil will allow students to not only write but also share through drawing, which will be very helpful for differentiating for students!
Lastly, the iPad will allow me to swiftly go through slide shows that include problems and student directions, while managing students as I circulate around the room. I will feel like I'm able to be in two places at once, taking care of what's on the board from the iPad while monitoring students with proximity. The iPad (with a protective case) and an Apple Pencil will allow my students and me to capitalize on learning time!
