Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school consists of over 600 students, in Early Transitional Kindergarten to fifth grade. Almost 90% of our population is considered low income and qualifies for free lunch. Our school represents a wide range of cultures.
Most of my students have never attended school and are adapting to the academic demands of kindergarten.
I love finding lessons and appropriate resources that support them as English learners as well as build on their genuine curiosity. It is truly magical to see their faces light up with joy when they accomplish new tasks independently.
My Project
Although students receive a healthy complete breakfast, they still get hungry. A few of them bring snacks but they are not healthy.
Most of the students do not bring anything and just watch the other children eat during their recess break.
We can hear them ask their classmates for snacks. This is heartbreaking because no child should have go without eating when their body requests it.
The snacks that I am requesting--Cheez-It, goldfish, fruit snacks, popcorn, Twizzlers-- will be given to students to eat during their recess time and/or as they need it. They will be easily accessible so that they may enjoy them.
