Every day 20 children enter my classroom with bundles of energy and an excitement to learn. What you won't see is the baggage that many of these first grade students carry with them: messy home lives, families struggling to get by, children taking on more responsibility than any child should have to. My first grade classroom is made up of wonderful six and seven year-olds who vary in ability and background, but are all part of a fantastic classroom family. Our school is a public K-5 building and is situated in an area where many families are facing economic hardships.

L-ea-r-n-ing to r-ea-d is h-ar-d w-or-k! If you were a first grader, this may be how you read: sounding out every letter or sound as you go. In first grade, we strive for reading with fluency. Fluent readers read text without sounding out every letter. Fluent readers read with emotion. And most importantly, fluent readers can read for enjoyment and understanding because they are not thinking about each sound.

One of the best ways for young children to improve their fluency is to listen to other fluent readers. A listening center is the perfect solution for this problem. Right now, we have books on CD, but have no place to set them up. If we had a dedicated space for listening to stories, then the children could visit the listening center whenever time allowed. A permanent listening center would solidify the importance of becoming a fluent reader in our classroom.

Your will make it possible for my young first grade students to develop into fluent readers. With your help, these students will not only become successful readers, but will foster a true love for reading and learning.
