Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently teach a full day Kindergarten class at a charter school in Los Angeles. Dramatic play is an area that my students can benefit from immensely. I, like many kindergarten teachers, feel torn between teaching the standards and practicing what is developmentally appropriate. With the majority of our student population identified as English Language Learners, I feel they do not have ample opprtunity to explore enriching play environments for literacy development.
Research suggests that children's creative engagement with reading and writing activities through play has important implications for their literacy development. When given the opportuntity to engage in "literate" play settings filled with reading and writing materials, they readily incorporate literacy into their play episodes.
I am interested in creating a "dramatic theme" corner in my classroom. This center would change according to the theme we are studying. These centers would have props and furniture that suggest specific settings that ar familiar to children, e.g., restaurant, doctor's office, bank, etc.
The enriching materials that would be needed to get started for 20 students are:
1) play cash register
2) play kits (doctor's play kit, veternarians play medical kit, plastic tool set
3) newborn baby dolls of various ethnicities.
In order for our English Language Learners to succeed, we need to provide a greater variety of functional encounters with language in print rich settings. For young children, it may be the place to play with print with a purpose.
