Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are seventh graders who are eager to learn pre-algebra and know how very important mathematics knowledge is in today's workplace. They attend the largest K-8 school in our state. Most speak two languages, the first of which is not English. Many are new to this country and are struggling academically and economically. Despite these challenges, they are eager to learn and have their eye on getting into a good high school.
Most of my students start the year well below their expected grade level.
This means that they must learn new material while also filling many gaps that really should have been mastered in previous grades. This represents a huge challenge for students and teachers. Many of our students work hard and know that math skills and knowledge are their ticket to a bright future. For students who are also struggling to learn English, math is one subject that they can still usually excel at, more than say, language arts. This is why math is a favorite subject for many of my students.
My Project
We are starting a new year and it is time to stock up on essentials for our math classroom. We are down to our last printer cartridge for our classroom printer! As you know, cartridges are very expensive and are indispensable when running four math classes. Students need lots of paper to work on their practice sheets for equations and algebraic word problems.
P is also for Pencils and Posters!
Everyday we have at least a dozen students who require a pencil. Without it, they are unable to work on their math problems. This is unacceptable. Additionally, students LOVE to get creative in class. For example, last month students created posters of Latin American mathematicians, technology leaders and business people. This was in honor of Hispanic Heritage month. We now need more posters so we can create posters of solving equations.
These are basic supplies that will help all our students learn the math skills they require to be successful in today's competitive workplace. With your help, you can guarantee that today's math students have the tools they need to learn and advance.
