Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a Title I school in the South Bronx. They live in the lowest academically performing school district in New York. This is also one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. Many of my students have to walk through dangerous streets to get to school. Despite these challenges, they are eager to learn when provided with the opportunity and resources. Our school is a safe space for them to grow and flourish. We have an exceptionally strong social support system, with counselors working with small groups of students on an ongoing basis from grades 6 to 12 to ensure they graduate from high school and enroll in college.
When my students enter the classroom and see an experiment set up, they are excited and curious, and want to start exploring right away.
Most of my students come from homes where parent(s) are not able to provide academic enrichment opportunities outside of school. My students truly appreciate any of the extras we can bring into the classroom.
I am hoping to create an exciting, positive, learning environment for my students to explore the world around them.
My Project
I would like to present my students with an easy and accessible introduction to coding. My middle school students have only had limited access and exposure to technology. Those who struggle academically unsurprisingly shy away from traditional methods of instruction, but the Ozobot Evo and Sphero should prove irresistible to even the most reluctant learner.
Some of my students with learning disabilities, as well as those with behavioral issues, love to draw so the Ozobot's marker drawn code should at once be familiar and inviting.
In addition, OzoBlockly, the kid-friendly programming language designed for students offers four different levels of complexity, ranging from an icons-only novice mode to an advanced version, complete with complex math functions. It brings programming to life in an immediate tangible way for students.
The Sphero can be used with the SPRK Lightning Lab app which includes a variety of hands-on learning activities. My students will definitely be learning through play with these two cool robot toys.
