Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you were fortunate enough as a child to have the opportunity to dissect an owl pellet, chances are you still remember it vividly. I'd like to give my students the opportunity to "get their hands dirty" by dissecting owl pellets with a partner.
My students are a diverse group of children ages 9 through 12.
I promote a very math/science oriented classroom, and my students become curious and excited about all things scientific. After all, science is so much fun for kids! I like to take scientific concepts and apply them across the curriculum into all subject areas. The students attend a suburban school that is designated as low income.
My Project
My students will dissect owl pellets with a partner, and in the process learn about cooperation with others, animal anatomy, food chains, and predator/prey relationships. They will learn that the scientific method and scientific investigation can be intriguing and fun. The gross-out factor adds even more excitement! To enrich the unit, they will receive a visit from an owl and its keeper from a small local zoo. They will also have the opportunity to participate in literature circles throughout the year based on Carl Hiassen's Newberry Honor award-winning children's novel Hoot.
This project will expose my students to a new experience, help them create fond memories of school, and perhaps inspire them to pursue a career in the sciences.
