I teach sixth through eighth-grade general and special education alternative school students with varying levels of needs. Along with another teacher and an instructional aide, we share one large space and teach all subjects.
My students attend our Personalized Alternative Learning School or PALS for short.
Not only is our goal to teach our students how to be independent students again, but to keep them interested in learning, so that when they leave our school, they can perform well in their classes.
My Project
This project will use preserved and stained animal specimens as well as allow students to study the skulls and bones of common owl prey.
Students will gain a deep understanding of the vertebrate endoskeleton by dissecting an owl pellet and examining cleared and stained frog, snake, and rat specimens.
Through these activities, students study anatomical differences, homologous structures, and examine a framed set of common skulls found in owl pellets to identify what their owl ate.
Students will also use sources to identify the bone structure of their animal and attempt to articulate the skeleton by mounting it on black paper. This is a wonderful activity for comparative anatomy.
