Do you remember the wonder and marvels of nature? The beauty of watching a colorful bird fly overhead, the unspoken communication of the flock when geese migrate south, the variety of noises in a forest? While one can read about these, there is no substitute for experiencing the real thing!
Our elementary school is the largest in our rural community of 8,000.
We have 17 classrooms grades K-5, with full inclusion of our special needs students with physical and cognitive challenges. Our school population is transient because of two nearby military installations and we have many students who have parents currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, some deployed overseas.
With declining funding, we work harder with less and strive to make every student feel valued and successful! Our school community celebrates learning, cooperation and teamwork, and the importance of kindness. We utilize volunteers, high school tutors, positive behavior intervention systems, community resources, and creativity to meet the needs of our students.
My Project
First graders are inquisitive, enthusiastic, and involved learners. They learn best by using their senses and 'being' part of the learning environment - touching, asking, experimenting, exploring, and experiencing! What better way than exploring the world around them and participating in nature? Our learners will hear the cries of owls, see the natural patterns which exist in nature, and compare the methods of camouflage animals employ.
Visiting the nature reserve, we will have the opportunity to use nature as our classroom and laboratory.
We will explore animal habitats, the cycles of nature, and experience the forest firsthand.
