My students are an absolutely fantastic bunch of kids.
They are a very diverse urban population that have unfortunately been plagued with a lot of worksheets in their science experience. I'm taking on the task of bringing in more hands-on and physical activities to these students to help them learn to enjoy their education!
My Project
My students have not had many hands-on activities or laboratory experiences in their science careers. I strongly feel that these students will benefit from engaging in one of science's fun/gross/awesome aspects of dissection. If I can get my students more excited to come to my class and learn, I'm hoping this will carry over to their other classes. In this way, they will learn to be more responsible of their own education. My hope is that dissecting owl pellets will motivate some of my students to pursue a career in science.
My students don't get many opportunities to enjoy the fun parts of science that require funding.
I've been able to make a lot of fun experiences involving the scientific method with just normal house-hold items. It is my belief that as resourceful as I've been, nothing will compare to the experience of handling an authentic owl pellet. My students have worked hard and been very flexible to budget constraints and funding, but I think they would strongly benefit from this opportunity.
