How much fun would it be to learn about the food chain by dissecting owl pellets? More fun than I, or even my students, has ever had in science class! I am a fifth grade science teacher and I teach two classes, each with 30 students. One of my goals at the start of this school year is to conduct more lab investigations to generate an interest and love of science. Overall, my school's science test scores have been low and our goal is to improve those scores. One way I am planning on reaching that goal is by becoming more of a hands-on science teacher and brings in more materials to replace simply reading from a textbook. One of my major units this year will be about Ecosystems and a big part of this unit is studying food chains and predator-prey relationships. To teach this, I would like to conduct an investigation in our school's science lab and examine barn own pellets. Each student will have his/her own owl pellet to dissect and discover first hand how a food chain works. I am extremely excited about this hands-on project and am asking you, the donor, to help me in my endeavor. I can see the excitement on my students' faces now when I introduce this activity. Please take a moment to consider funding this activity. You will make a difference by making my students real scientists! Thank you for your consideration.
