My Students

My second and fifth graders are Super Scientists and outstanding scholars. Our teachers and faculty dedicate their time to help young scholars feel loved and safe. Our suburban school is in Northern California and an increasing number of our students qualify for free lunch. We are a diverse school, serving scholars of various socio-economic and ethnic diversity, as well as levels of academic achievement backgrounds. Our district's mission is for each student to graduate with the skills needed to contribute and thrive in a changing world. My Super Scientists are special. Before distance learning, they enter the science lab with curiosity and explosive energy to learn science through hands-on labs, collecting evidence, and writing about science in science notebooks. My students' imagination runs wild when it comes to constructing explanations and designing models. I want to continue this enthusiasm during distance learning.

Effective teaching and learning of science involve seeing, handling, and manipulating real objects and materials.

The materials in this proposal will inspire asynchronous student learning in a fun, hands-on, and interactive way to build on curiosity and understanding of science concepts through research and discovery during these challenging times of distance learning.

My Project

An owl pellet dissection at-home lab is a memorable (and fun!) way to learn about the eating habits of birds of prey— birds such as owls eat rodents and small birds. The owl pellet dissection lab is a project-based learning activity that will help my students understand the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment. Every student will receive a large owl pellet to dissect and two wooden probes and through this activity, they will get a better glimpse into the life of an animal they may never see in the wild. This project will help me to expand from virtual to project-based learning by allowing students to explore and discover the wonders of nature.
