My fourth grade students have recently enjoyed reading ?Poppy? by Avi. In the book the central characters are Mr. Ocax, an owl, and Poppy, a mouse. Poppy's family is in constant fear of being eaten by Mr. Ocax. Poppy's boyfriend, Ragweed, was killed by Mr. Ocax and Poppy was horrified to see his earring in one of the owls pellets beneath his watching tree. In an effort to tie in my students' enjoyment of this wonderful book with our Science unit on animals, I would like them to have the opportunity to dissect owl pellets. Through this experience, students will make observation, use charts to identify skeletal remains of small animals, and in learn about the interdependence of animals. In order to give them this experience, they will need owl pellets, probing tools, hand lenses, and identification charts. Participating in this exploration will bring this book to life for my students and help them make connections to draw from.
