My students need funds to attend an interactive, two days and one night field trip. All of the learning takes place outdoors and students learn about the Oregon Trail.

My Students

My group of fifth graders come to school every day with a smile on their face, ready to learn. These students come from daily trauma where their neighborhood isn't safe; they have seen far too many things that many adults don't experience. Yet, they have dreams of becoming someone BIG. They dream of becoming doctors, lawyers, teachers, joining the military and/or a skilled trade. I have been to many schools but this school and classroom in particular is unique and special. I love their determination and dedication to showing the world that they can be anything they want to become - that trauma and poverty don't define who they are and what they will become.

My Project

Students have learned about Oregon Trail in the classroom. They will have the opportunity to explore the nature while learning different hands on things about the Oregon Trail.

All of the students learning will occur outside for two days.

They will learn how to pack a wagon, touch real furs, make candles, make bread and butter, cut wood and work together as a team to build a homestead. At night, they will get to enjoy a campfire and sleep in cabins with their friends.

For most, this is the first time they have had the chance to experience nature and the beauty of the outdoors. They have not had the opportunity to camp, enjoy a campfire, sing camp songs and be with their classmates for the night.

This experience is not only educational, it allows for the kids to be outdoors and away from the city and their daily challenges they face to just be kids..
