Our school is a health and nutrition school in a city district of New York. The school serves grades pre-kindergarten through three. We are a tight-knit school where the students love to be in school. The students need fun and engaging activities to foster their love of learning at a young age.
Many of them may not have access to these experiences at home, so I want to provide that for them in the classroom.
Many of my students come from immigrant homes where English is not the first language. This has not hindered their enthusiasm and curiosities. They have questions and ideas but are always in need of resources for inspiration and reference.
My Project
Reading stories and talking about them is one of the best ways to challenge stereotypes and feel valued. Many of the students in my school receive free lunch and many live at or below the poverty line. Yet, the books we read are about children whose lives are vastly different from my students. They don't feel connected to the story and more importantly, they don't feel valued.
It's important that children connect to the stories they read and read stories about overcoming the complex issues of life.
I want my students to be inspired and moved by the stories they read. I want them to feel connected to characters and experiences in books and understand that not only are they not alone, but that they can overcome!
