Do you remember high school? Being a teen can be hard. While we want to encourage our teens to be well rounded and take advantage of the amazing opportunities that surround them, we also need to make sure we provide them with the necessary tools to navigate the fast paced world we live in. It impresses me how so many of our high school students are able to manage rigorous academic demands, athletic schedules, homework, home responsibilities and sometimes full time jobs. Their efforts however do not occur without stress.
Approximately 85% of our high school freshman stated they feel stressed and overwhelmed by the demands placed on them.
Teens are demonstrating higher degrees of anxiety and depression than years past. These same students are requesting help identifying strategies for reducing the stress they are experiencing.
My Project
High school teens have been reporting exceptionally high rates of stress, anxiety and depression, as a result of the increasing complexities of our ever changing world. Increasing academic and social demands during the teen years only complicates matters. A recent survey of students from our school showed that teens would embrace activities that helped reduce stress and/or assist with time management. Research shows that mindfulness practices in school has significantly improved the outcomes for youth.
Our students will use these yoga mats to engage in regular yoga and mindfulness techniques, which will improve their overall health and well being
Our students will learn a variety of yoga poses, breathing exercises and calming techniques for reducing stress and developing a greater sense of self.
