I teach a self-contained special education classroom of students with serious emotional disabilities which is displayed through serious and destructive behaviors. I teach multiple grades – kindergarten through second grade. My students have such potential but come from various backgrounds and family situations. Many of my students are either in foster care or are being raised by a relative other than their birth parents.
My students thrive with structure, routine, nurturing, and unconditional love.
Their academic and emotional levels are vastly different. I want my students to love to come to school and desire to become productive members of the school environment and eventually society.
My Project
My school and community suffered greatly from Hurricane Florence. My students were out of school for over 30 days. Many of my students lost everything. My classroom lost many materials. My students are now trying to catch up academically due to lost instructional time. With so much on their minds in their home life, I would like to provide fun and engaging hands-on centers to peak and keep their interest in learning. Many of my lower academically functioning students with poor motor skills need manipulatives and fun centers to keep them from acting-out behaviorally and give them a positive experience for learning new concepts in math and language activities.
