Our school is a K-5 school located in eastern North Carolina, in a small suburban community with a population of approximately 30,300 people. Our school serves some of the lowest socioeconomic households in the city limits; much of our school population are at or below the poverty line. Our school enjoys a large population of refugees from various nations who have been re-homed to this area. Most of these students come from Burma, Thailand, Yemen, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Our community and our school were deeply impacted by Hurricane Florence.
Many of our students experienced flooding and damage after the storm. The Media Center in our school also flooded and experienced significant damage and loss. Among these losses, a great deal of library technology and student materials were lost.
The students at our school are bright and enthusiastic learners. Each of them works diligently to grow into responsible and driven members of the 21st century global community. Please help get our school's library recover from Hurricane Florence, and create a dynamic, collaborative student-centered space for learning.
My Project
Hurricane Florence gutted our school's library. We lost technology, furniture, books, and supplies necessary to keep a 21st century literacy program functioning each day. As we face a renovation, our students need and deserve a dynamic learning space where they can collaborate, create, and share!
The way students interact with the library's collection directly impacts their learning!
Our bulky desktop computers used to search the catalog for materials were flooded. Replacing them with iPad kiosks will give students the opportunity for interactive search of the collection for resources, and to connect with the library's materials in a more dynamic way!
