My Students

My students are enthusiastic and engaged learners. This is a sub-separate specialized classroom that works with students diagnosed with autism. The school is in a large inner city with limited resources. These students not only have diverse academic and social needs, but many come from lower-income households. One-half of my students are English Language Learners, and all have significant special needs. A third of these students are nonverbal or have a limited verbal output which often results in frustration. These students work so hard to learn things we take for granted.

My students learn primarily through discrete trial training and tasks being broken down to the smallest component.

Task boxes are a great way to encourage independence and positive self-esteem by allowing the students to complete each activity by themselves.

My Project

My specialized classroom has very diverse needs. Many of my students need outside-the-box programs to help them learn. Edmark Reading is a program designed for these students that struggle learning how to read the traditional phonics way. These students need a specialized reading program that works for them. Everyone should learn to read and these students deserve an opportunity as well.

The program is described as follows: “The key to this success is the program’s use of a carefully sequenced, highly repetitive word recognition method combined with errorless learning.

This approach eliminates incorrect responses and helps students view themselves as readers. The Edmark Reading Program ensures success to students of all ages who have not yet mastered beginning reading.“
