My students are creative, inquisitive, bright, and thoughtful. They crave knowledge. They are quick to ask questions, cautious about accepting others' blanket opinions and eager to search for the truth.
My students love reading!
And, they want to read books that are relevant to their lives, with characters who share their experiences. They want to feel like they can connect, relate, empathize, live. And when they do, they want to talk about it, with each other, and with adults in their lives. Some of my favorite moments in the day come when a student stops to chat in the hallway, seeks me out in the cafeteria, or pulls me aside before they get on the school bus to talk about what they're reading. Your support fo this project will facilitate more of these experiences.
My Project
I want to put a copy of one of the most iconic middle level books of all time in the hands of my students while they are in quarantine. As I have taught this novel (I have only a class set of 35 books) to my classes over the years, students have commented time and time again how much the story impacted, changed their lives, and made them feel like they really could have a voice.
In these challenging times, The Outsiders will help my students feel like they belong, like they can persevere, and like their lives do matter.
While our conversations will be conducted remotely, either through a computer's lens, or over the phone, I continue to believe in the power this book wields to change and inspire.
