Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students within our school are grounded and have a deep connection to their future responsibilities within the world. The students are dedicated and hard working with a strong sense of identity. They understand the importance of an excellent education while still keeping their cultural connections.
The students understand that in order to be innovative and create positive change they must be skilled and prepared for a competitive world.
As a 6th grade math teacher the importance of preparing them is critical. The students desire a mathematical classroom that relates to real-world concepts with a problem-solution mindset. My students are tactile learners and learn best when they can physically work with manipulatives.
My Project
Teaching and learning can become inherently spontaneous and student-centered when moved from the confines of the classroom into the world at large.
From the collaborative learning atmosphere that results from the unique relationships developed outside the classroom, to the deep learning that occurs when students must put into practice “in the real world” what they have theorized about from behind a desk, field experiences are unmatched in their learning potential.
Field experiences early in a student’s career can be formative and can inspire students to continue in a field. by Lily Claiborne, John Morrell, Joe Bandy and Derek Bruff
Students have requested to move into an outside learning environment and I plan to deliver. The clipboards will help keep us organized and time effective. The markers will help us to color code and identify parts of our lesson. The fraction strips will help us to make visual connections about fractions and how they exist in the world around us.
I am thrilled to support students in not just an understanding of mathematics but how it connects to nature and the world around them. I am excited to implement students voices into how they want to develop and model their 6th grade mathematics classroom.
