Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
High school can be an insecure time in a young man's life. Help give my students a refuge from those insecurities. Give them a platform for discussion, give them stories to uplift, and characters to comfort, give them examples to aspire to and cautionary tales to avoid. Help give my students a book.
The 25 gentlemen of the McCabe advisory are well on their way to becoming young men.
They work extremely hard in school, and deserve a chance to enjoy reading at the same time. Together, with the help of the DonorsChoose community, we have read the Catcher in the Rye, Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Monster, and the Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. My boys are beginning to love reading. They are starting to realize the immense number of books out there and the potential of a story to lift spirits, engage the mind and open the soul.
My Project
These two books - "Looking for Alaska" and "Outliers" are an attempt to expand the literary horizons of my students. "Looking for Alaska" is a chance to discuss the more sensitive topics that can touch a high school student's experience- love, loss, friendship, mischief and misbehavior. We will read together and independently, and discuss how the book relates to my students' lives. We will empathize with the characters, yet also hold them accountable.
"Outliers" will be our first foray into nonfiction. We will read the book when my boys are juniors, preparing for the college application process. It will start discussions on the odds we face in life, and the potential for committed individuals to rise above. We will consider what it takes to be outliers in our own lives and discuss the peculiar quirks of history that Gladwell raises. Most importantly the book will be a chance for those students who have not found much enjoyment with Harry Potter or other narratives to read a book they love.
Perhaps you were blessed to grow up in a home where the books of your dreams already sat on the shelf, just waiting for you to pick them up.
This project is the next step in a four-year project to place as many books as possible in the hands of my incredible students. They deserve the chance to love reading; help them get that chance.
