This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students at Sci High are naturally curious about the world around them. Our school is the top open enrollment school in the New Orleans and this year, our budding ECS program will graduate nearly 20 students.
I support students who experience emotional challenges throughout the school day.
In class, there are activities that can become triggering and in those cases our students will benefit from a space that supported them in finding balance. My students are often the students who lead the classroom and their presence is missed in times of distress. What my students contribute to the classroom is beyond incredible. Because of this I am really proud to have an opportunity to give back to a school that provided me with one of the best educations this city has to offer.
My Project
Outer Space at Sci High will support students with emotional disabilities as a safe space to rest, decompress and rejoin their classmates while preserving their dignity in moments of crisis.
Outer Space will put the students in control featuring special lighting that students can voice control with Alexa aside a ball pit, magnetic gears wall, LEGO building spaces, and reflection writing stations.
The space will be available to students throughout the school day and can be requested to visit at any time. This project will help create a space in our school to provide a place that protects the students dignity while practicing decompression strategies.
