Mrs. Schmidt from Sausalito CA is requesting a class trip through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Outdoors for All and All for the Outdoors!!

Help me give my students a chance to co-exist in the outdoors. There they will learn to direct their own science learning, pursue their curiosities and learn to be together in the wilderness.

My Students

There is no one socioeconomic or race majority at our school. We are a truly diverse school, making teaching here a thrill. One-third of the students are "in need," and one-third of the students are learning English as a second language.

Our school is undergoing some extreme financial duress, and the 5th grade Outdoor School experience was the first to go.

We'd still like to take our students to Outdoor school for three nights and four days in Pescadero.

It's a Fifth grade tradition to go to Outdoor School. We sleep in cabins, and go on nature hikes along streams, through redwood groves and at the ocean. For students who don't get out much, the Outdoor school creates common experiences and unique understandings, that ultimately bring us together as a learning community.

My Project

This 4 day, 3 night trip to the great outdoors allows students to bond together in new ways, synthesize and transfer all the science classroom information we have learned this year to real life. Finally, students are given a chance at some self-re-invention before middle school. Students attend a program in the redwoods, 7 miles inland from the Pescadero Marsh. Students, their classroom teachers, and volunteer high school cabin leaders explore the redwood forest, oak woodlands, salt-water marsh, tide pools, and organic garden.

The ability to transfer knowledge from classroom learning and apply understanding to real life gives students a sense of purpose, a feel for place and it also provides each of them with 'Academic Capital' in the classroom.

All year long in the classroom, and on class field trips, we encourage learning. We fill their heads with information. This trip is a chance to see all the systems of the Earth working together, and for students know and be able to talk about what they are seeing.

Naturalists lead students in place-based learning, concentrating on interdependence, cycles, ecology, and more, deepening students’ ecological knowledge and interest in science and environmental stewardship. School groups also engage in

cooperative team building activities, including family style dining, designed to build trust within and between the hiking groups and participating classes or schools.

Learnings are reinforced through reflective nature journaling;

drawing or nature art; participatory group songs, dances, and puppet shows; and skits where cabin groups act out

a concept they have learned during the week.

And, finally, a week out of the classroom in a new and emotionally-safe space builds students’ self-confidence, empowering

them to disrupt their classroom identities, behavior patterns, and solidify relationships with teachers and peers.
