Our school serves school students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from City Hall. Students live in many areas of The City. For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate.
Students enjoy outdoor activities, especially basketball.
After some physical exercise breaks, most students are able to have better focus of classwork.
My Project
Part of the "yard" at our school is a parking area.
In the other half of our yard, students enjoy pick up basketball games.
We need new basketball equipment: portable hoop & some balls. Every sunny day (& even some gloomy, rainy days) several students shoot hoops. They also challenge teachers & staff to try & beat their scores. With the new basketballs & the additional portable hoop, more students can participate. Getting out & enjoying physical activities help our students regain focus for classwork. Many students are in group homes or foster care & they enjoy a chance to play on teams with friends at school.
Also students would like to try a new sport: volleyball! They will learn about the rules & post helpful direction signs for students who want to try this new activity.
